Large gatherings, such as concerts, sports events, and ceremonies, bring people together for moments of joy and celebration. However, in the midst of these bustling crowds, medical emergencies can occur, and a quick and knowledgeable response becomes crucial. That’s why having individuals trained in first aid, CPR and AED use at these events is of paramount importance.Â
Let me share a personal experience that highlights the significance of this training. Recently, at my daughter Kaley’s senior awards ceremony, a sudden medical emergency unfolded. A fellow attendee, visibly distressed, was showing possible signs of a cardiac event.Â
As luck would have it, two other off-duty paramedics and I were present, armed with our knowledge of first aid, CPR, and AED procedures. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, we immediately came to his aid.Â
While this person wasn’t yet experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, we understood that without timely intervention, his condition could rapidly deteriorate. Working together as a team, we assessed the individual’s vital signs, provided comfort, and initiated the necessary steps to manage their condition until professional medical help arrived.Â
What stood out during this incident was the response time of the EMS. The delay in their arrival reminded us of the importance of having trained individuals within the community, particularly at large gatherings. In critical situations, every minute counts, and the presence of trained individuals can bridge the gap between an escalating medical emergency and timely professional care.Â
“Studies have shown that immediate CPR and AED use can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.”

By having trained individuals at large gatherings, the response time to medical emergencies can be significantly reduced. Prompt initiation of CPR and early use of an AED greatly improve the chances of survival. Studies have shown that immediate CPR and AED use can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.
To ensure the safety and well-being of attendees, event organizers should prioritize the presence of trained personnel. This can be accomplished by offering first aid, CPR, and AED training courses to volunteers, staff members, and even attendees.
As business owners, organization leaders, and instructors; you should think about venues that hold these events as leads for both training and AED sales. By providing lifesaving training and devices strategically placed at these events, you’ll continue being a positive force for improving the cardiac arrest chain of survival.
